Question:
How can I accessorize this spring?

Answer: Whether it’s jewelry, a handbag, or your favorite pair of shoes, accessories are a great way to add flair and personality to any outfit this spring. Accessories are also perfect if you want to experiment with the latest avant-garde fashion trends without looking like you belong on a wall at the Met. Although there are no set rules when it comes to accessorizing,  there’s a fine line between a statement piece and going overboard. If you’re swimming through your piles of costume jewelry and silk scarves,  don’t fret! These tips will help you get decked out without looking like a Christmas tree.

Jewelry and pastels galore

Jewelry is the easiest way to accessorize. Whether you rock an expensive family heirloom or just pick through the clearance wall at the store, there are tons of jewelry that will help make that outfit your own. We spoke to fashionista Kathleen Ong of Wantering about her favorite spring accessories: “Pastels are simple and understated—and since the pastel trend includes accessories as well, I’m looking forward to wearing this Miansai Gold Mini Hook Wrap Bracelet pretty much everywhere.” When it comes to choosing the right piece for the right look, there are a few things to take into consideration. The first is the texture and material of your clothing. If you decide to wear a shimmery metallic cocktail dress, you won’t need much jewelry to help your look pop. If you’re going with a solid colored piece, then feel free to pile on the bling.

Pay attention to the cut and design of a garment. A statement necklace is a great way to accentuate your collar bone on a sleeveless or off-the-shoulder top, or paired with a collared shirt for a more feminine look. The way you style your hair will also determine the type of jewelry you should wear. An up-do is the perfect excuse to rock some chandelier earrings, but can also be worn with your hair down for some extra sparkle. If you have a pixie cut or a bob, some dangly earrings will give you a feminine glamorous look.

Girls love to sparkle, but sometimes less is more. With statement pieces like a chunky necklace or flashy earrings, sometimes mixing and matching can weigh down not only your look, but your ears and neck as well. Stick to one statement piece so no one’s attention is drawn away from your natural beauty or that super chic outfit!

Scarves and bags

Jewelry isn’t the only way to accessorize. Scarves are an excellent and comfortable way to add color to a bland outfit. Scarves are perfect for any temperature; thicker knit scarves are a great way to brighten up a bland winter coat, and thin silk scarves can help you look chic even when it’s hot out. There are tons of creative ways to wear scarves. A thick knit scarf can be draped or wrapped over your coat, while a light scarf can be tied at the ends to make an infinity scarf. If you’re really feeling creative, try twisting a thin scarf into a headband to wear in your hair.

Aside from scarves and jewelry, the easiest and most functional accessory a girl can own is a handbag. With bags available in every size, color, pattern, and material, the possibilities are endless. A large, neutral colored purse is perfect for everyday use and will match with any outfit. Want to spice up a neutral outfit? Go for a patterned, colorful bag, like a tribal print or a floral print. “Two big trends this season are florals and backpacks, so why not merge them together?” says Wantering’s Kathleen Ong. “I’m carrying this Msgm Floral Backpack around while traveling this spring.”

To pump up your evening look, a sparkly clutch is perfect for club hopping and will add flair to a black cocktail dress.

When it comes to accessorizing, the possibilities are endless! What are some of your favorite spring accessories?
