Question: What are the best drugstore makeup products for my cosmetics bag?

Answer: I vividly remember the day I filled up my makeup bag with my first ever makeup item — a drugstore brand mascara. That was approximately three years ago, and now my makeup bag won’t even fully zip! Makeup is very pricey, so you can imagine how much the cost of a full-blown makeup kit would be. Contrary to popular belief, drugstore makeup does not necessarily equate to poor quality.

Eyeliner, hence the name, essentially lines your eyes. It also is a speedy way to brighten your eyes by making them look bigger. You can keep it simple with a classic black eyeliner, or go for colored eyeliner if you’re looking to give a pop of color. There are many different mediums for eyeliner — gel liner, liquid liner, and pencil liner. However, if you’re just starting out with makeup, I would recommend starting out with pencil liner, as it offers the most control and is the easiest to apply.

The eyeliner above from Maybelline is creamy, and almost crayon-like, making it extremely easy to apply. It simply glides on your eyes, so there’s no need to tug on those lids! It also is smudge-proof, so there’s no need to worry about looking like a mess after you’ve rubbed your eyes.

Eye Shadow

My favorite drugstore palette is the Maybelline ‘The Nudes’ Palette, which just hit stores recently! This palette comes with 12 eye shadow colors; all pigmented, and very build able. The matte eye shadows are slightly sheer, so there is practically no fallout, and with the primer (such as the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk, which can be used as a primer or as an eye shadow) you’re all set!

Foundation is typically used to even out the skin tone, therefore giving you that sun kissed, flawless look. While drugstore foundations may not provide as much coverage as those in Sephora, this foundation by Revlon provides decent coverage and does not fade.

I personally love the full, dramatic, voluminous eyelash look. Unfortunately, my eyelashes beg to differ. But, with just an eyelash curler and a swipe of my favorite mascara, my eyelashes are instantly transformed!

If you’re looking for volume, opt for a volume mascara. For fuller lashes, vouch for a buildable mascara and layer a volume mascara over that.

This mascara from NYX instantly adds volume and gives the illusion of fuller, darker lashes. It is definitely my go-to mascara, as it is nor flaky or clumpy.  However, when I feel like switching it up sometimes, I will use the Wet N’ Wild Mega Length Mascara (used for length) and follow off with the Maybelline Rocket Blast Volum Express (intended for volume).

The best thing about creating a makeup collection is that, alike skin products, no one product is bound to work for everyone. Trying out and purchasing drugstore makeup has definitely encouraged me to be more open-minded about makeup. It’s not all about the fancy packaging, no: it’s what lies behind the tube!

So, what is in your drugstore makeup bag?
