Question:
What are a few of the best ways to wear floral?

Answer: After such a long, bleak winter (polar vortex, anyone?), we’ll gladly welcome any sign that spring is truly here. The biggest indicator of warming temperatures? Budding blooms. And let’s face it: nothing says spring like florals. Even if you prefer your flowers in dirt rather than on your clothing or accessories, now is the time to branch out and test floral prints.

While it certainly isn’t the most innovative or groundbreaking trend (as we see it year after year on the runways and on daring fashionistas), florals are a signature statement for spring. Each year, they’re re-imagined and created with a more sophisticated and modern touch with a slight edge. Whether you choose a floral print dress, pants, or a pretty blouse—there are plenty of opportunities to tap into your petal power this spring. Have a little fun this season with florals, using these tips for incorporating floral staples in your everyday wear:

Dresses

Perhaps the easiest way to wear the trend is by rocking a floral print dress. It’s perfect for a variety of occasions—a weekend stroll, a shopping excursion, or for work at the office—a floral dress is a must-have for spring. To liven things up at night in your floral frock, wear a bright, chic pair of heels that correspond to one of the colors on your dress, and a bold statement necklace to draw attention to the neckline. You can toughen up the dress with a light leather jacket or oxford shoes for a look all your own.

Just be careful when it comes to finding the right sized floral pattern proportionate to your body. Petite? Try smaller floral prints that won’t overwhelm your body. Those who are taller or flaunt fuller-figures should choose big, bold patterns to complement their shapes. Busy floral prints can be an entire look on its own, so keep your makeup and accessories minimal. The patterned dress should be the star of the show here.

Pants

If head-to-toe florals aren’t your thing, why not shake things up with a pair of printed pants? Playful and bold, floral pants can be an effortless way to add a little color to your wardrobe, while straying away from those tried-and-true denim and blues. With so many styles and silhouettes to choose from, make sure you choose a color and pattern size that works for you and your body. But the biggest piece of advice we can offer is to keep the rest of your outfit simple. Opt for a complementary, solid-colored blouse that you can tuck in, letting your pants do all the work. To really mix it up, try a simple striped tee or a loose-fitting t-shirt. Make it office appropriate by pairing your pants with a basic black blazer and pumps.

Tops

Floral tops are great for an easy, breezy spring and summer look when paired with regular jeans, white pants or neutral bottoms. The key is to make sure your top and bottom half aren’t competing for attention.

Accessories

If you’re fearful of the floral print trend, add a floral print accessory such as shoes, jewelry, a bag or a scarf into your outfit for a subtle impact. Just don’t wear them all together at once. As with any other trend, balance is the principle. Choose one thing, whether it be a necklace or a purse, and let that be your statement piece. Add edgier accessories in dark colors or materials to toughen up floral looks that are a bit more feminine.

Not exactly for wallflowers, this trend can be a bit intimidating and perhaps a little girly, but florals can act as a statement all on their own or complement pieces that already exist in your wardrobe. From casual to dressy, there’s a bold floral print out there for everyone—to help you celebrate spring in style.
