Question:
How can I make homemade lip balm?

Answer: Every girl needs a good lip balm in her life. I happen to be one of those girls who needs about five: one for each purse and, of course, my bedside table. There are some great options at the drugstore, but why go to the drugstore when you can have some DIY fun in your kitchen? Homemade lip balm is not only natural and frugal, but also makes a great gift for friends and family and happens to be really fun.

First, gather your ingredients. The main ingredient you’ll need is beeswax, which can be found at most health food stores. The rest is up to your experimentation, but you’ll want to have a few key ingredients on hand: Butter—either shea butter or cocoa butter, and oil—coconut oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil.

To make your lip balm smell delicious, pick out your favorite essential oil or flavoring. For a minty tingle, use peppermint oil. For a sweet delight, try buttercream flavor oil. The possibilities are endless! You can even make it tinted by adding in a small amount of lipstick.

Here’s the recipe: Start by heating up 2 parts oil in a pan over the stove over medium low heat. Next add 2 parts of the butter. Once that’s melted, add 1 part beeswax and stir until everything’s combined. Since this recipe is so simple, you can make as much lip balm as you want.

Here’s where you get creative: Add a drop of tea tree oil for antibacterial properties, or a teaspoon of honey for moisture and sweetness. This is also the time to add any essential oils you’d like, or a small amount of lipstick to give it a beautiful tint. If you have Vitamin E oil, throw in a drop. It acts as a natural preservative and will help your lip balm will last.

One of my favorite combinations is peppermint oil with cocoa powder. You’ll have a chocolaty mint pucker that is ultra-kissable. As far as containers, you can order lip balm tubes. Another great idea is to use an empty mini altoids tin. Simply pour the melted lip balm into your chosen vessel, and let it cool. You’ll have a delicious lip balm in no time!
