Question: How do I wear a crop top if I’m curvy?
Ah, the crop top — you are a tricky little number. Between your nostalgic 90s roots and your current fashion rule, you can be pretty hard to style. You have been getting your freak on everywhere from Catwalks in Milan and New York, to that trendy street style blogger that I just happen to stalk on Insta. One thing’s for sure: you’ve pipped your longer torso-d pals to the post and you aren’t going to go away anytime soon.
But don’t fret, ladies! You don’t have to have Ri-Ri’s washboard abs (believe me: I wish I did, too!) to pull off the look of the season. All it takes is a few tips and tricks.
Erm, excuse me Rihanna: I love you, but it’s time to move over and hand over your crop-top-style-reign to the curvy ladies!
Tip 1: The Cover Up
I, myself am a size 10-12 (UK) fashionista and although that is by no means large, I don’t exactly do a million crunches a day to keep in shape. Let’s face it: I much prefer chocolate!
Although ‘the cover up’ may sound like some kind of FBI mission, rest assured it is just a method I use to rock a crop without the whole world seeing that panini I just ate.
The trick is to pair a crop top with a high-waisted skirt, trousers or shorts. This shows less flesh, yet still gives you that cool silhouette.
For this look, I teamed a crop top with a lush high-waisted maxi skirt. Can you see my wobbily bits? I didn’t think so.
It’s important to remember that this method is a simple balancing act.
If you’re wearing a baggier crop, make sure to pair it with a tighter fitting garment on the bottom. If you go for baggy on both the top and the bottom this will make you appear a whole dress size larger — not good!
On the flip side, styling a tighter fitting top with a looser bottom is a sure winner in the style stakes. If you are an apple shape (larger on the top, smaller down below), high waisted flared midi skirts are an amazing way to balance you out and cinch you in at the waist. Hello, Marilyn!
Tip 2: The Nudey
If you are expecting some sort of naked pun or picture, I apologize. This technique is all about the right shade of nude, and I’m not talking 50 Shades of Grey here. All puns aside, you will need a nude strappy camisole as close to your natural skin colour as possible.
Pop your cami under a crop, and boom — you’re all covered!
If you are very self-conscious about your waistline, wear a body shaper cami under your crop top. No one will ever know!
Tip 3: Layer it Up
If you don’t fancy showing 360 degrees of flesh, A cute kimono or longer jacket is an amazing way to show just the right amount of flesh. Plus- this gives us the perfect excuse to rock two trends in one!
This look’s great for those chilly summer nights — brrr!
Tip 4: Rock It!
Girl — this trend is all about confidence! And if you feel like a supermodel in what you are wearing, you’ll look like one, too.
As this absolute stunner in the above picture shows, you don’t have to be a salad muncher to pull off this trend! How does she do it? Confidence! She feels sexy (and so right she should), and it shines through!
So, #effyourbeautystandards and throw on that crop top with a smile!
