Question: What are some cute summer outfits for 2014?

Answer: If you’re anything like me, you spend your winter months (that would be October through April here in Western New York) wrapped up in dark neutrals and muted colors like navy and oxblood. By the time summer rolls around, I can hardly remember that bright colors and fun patterns even exist, so it’s a bit of a process remembering how to wear them. Luckily, my fashion amnesia has subsided, so I can help out with suggestions for cute summer outfits for 2014!

If you’re going to a picnic…

Shorts are a wonderful summer staple—and on days with temperatures in the eighties or higher, what else could you possibly want to wear? Medium to darker washes of denim still retain an element of polish while providing a great foundation for wearing one of this year’s big trends…stripes! A simple striped tee is great to throw on for an easygoing day outdoors, but it’s still classic enough that you’ll look chic no matter what (even if you have to run into town to restock the lemonade). Fun, pattered sneakers ($39, are a must-have for this season, and aviator sunglasses paired with a comfy baseball cap will have you looking tomboy-cute in a snap. Finish off the look with unique, bohemian-inspired jewelry from designers like Alex and Ani, and you’ll be hotter than the fire you’re roasting marshmallows over.

If you’re going shopping with the girls…

Rompers are the ultimate easy summer outfit/lazy girl go-to; you just have to put on one piece of clothing and you’re done. Shoes and accessories are typically a good idea though—so let’s be overachievers, shall we? To complement this simple black romper, try out the tribal jewelry trend. A long necklace which hits mid-bust will add interest to the solid color of the romper, while a simple (yet pretty) bangle will catch the light as you window shop. Gladiator sandals with gold accents ($75, will glam it up a little bit, while still being comfy enough for a day of shopping. Finally, a backpack-style purse is supremely trendy and practical at the same time. I love the two colors of leather on this one by Tori Burch.

If you’re going on a date…

Dressing for a summertime date really can be both effortless and insanely cute. Break out a sweet sundress (which are literally everywhere right now), pair it with some strappy sandals and the ever-trendy jean jacket. Stash a cherry-tinted lip balm in the pocket of your jacket and add some feminine earrings ($19.00, to top off the look. The jacket is practical for the cooler summer nights—the shoes, not so much (but they’re so darn cute, who cares?).
