Question: What are some easy manicure ideas for 2014?
Answer: Since confession is the first step to recovery, I admit: I’m a manicure addict. My manicurist and I have a standing appointment every three weeks, and she gives me a discount because I’m such a regular customer. Nail art is not just part of my beauty routine; it’s a way of life!
Rationalizing my beauty habits aside, nails are an integral aspect to any great outfit. Along with warm weather (hello, shorts!), springtime also brings a fresh roundup of trends which can manifest in both outfits and nails. But why choose, right? I picked out three of the most popular nail art trends this season and put together outfits which help highlight them. Whether you’re planning a low-key day of errands or a night out, the following fashion tips will help you stay fabulously on-trend:
1. Pastel chevron nails
Pastels are one of my favorite trends this spring. I think a lot of people shy away from pastels because they don’t want to look too childish, but with proper styling, pastels can look polished and ultra-chic. Paired with a geometric chevron design, everything about this manicure is stylish (I almost typed ‘manicute’; that’s how cute these nails are).
What to wear:
To ensure that the colors remain the focus of this outfit, keep the foundational pieces simple: classic, medium-wash skinnies and a well-fitted white button-down are perfect. A white statement necklace and optional stacking rings add a little bit of interest without overpowering the star of the show here: color!
In order to highlight the two colors used in this manicure, I picked out shoes in a sunshine-y, buttery yellow and a great clutch in mint green. If you prefer pastels in shades of lavender, periwinkle, or peach—feel free to follow the same formula with your colors of choice! I selected a simple watch with a slightly menswear-esque shape, but with a peach face to tie in with the pastel theme of this outfit. Don’t be afraid to mix up your pastels, either! Burberry Prorsum and Roberto Cavalli’s Spring RTW collections included mixes of soft pinks, lavenders, and seafoam greens.
2. Nautical nails
On the resort 2014 runways, designers such as Chloé, Prabal Gurung and Carolina Herrera showed looks reminiscent of the high seas. You don’t have to be vacationing in the Hamptons to wear these styles, though—flaunt them on your nails, in your outfits, or both.
What to wear:
Nautical style is both classic and whimsical; a navy and white boatneck striped shirt paired with boyfriend jeans creates a look that’s both comfortable and chic. Boat shoes (see the theme here?) make this a great outfit to wear for an outdoor date or a walk in the park. Add a white cabled sweater for cool summer nights and some fun accessories (words cannot describe my love for Kate Spade’s idiom bangles), and you’re all set to rock this spring trend!
3. Glitter tips
It’s no big secret: I love glitter. Most days, I do my best to play my role as a #maturegrownup, but when anything remotely comes into the picture, all of that goes out the window. So, clearly, I am loving this trend. Not only is the manicure a relatively simple look to recreate, but it’s so romantic and feminine that it reminds me of a fairytale. I think this is the perfect manicure for a night out; Prince Charming not required.
What to wear:
Blush pink is one of this season’s most popular colors, and for good reason! It’s universally flattering, and can play the role of either a color or a neutral. For this outfit, I picked out a sundress reminiscent of the ultra-feminine looks seen in the spring collections from Isabel Marant and Zac Posen. Whether you prefer flats or heels, a t-strap silhouette adds a vintage feel. Delicate gold accents create the perfect finishing touches, à la the Dolce and Gabbana spring runway show, and a sweep of illuminating blush on the apples of the cheeks provides the perfect romantic flush.
