Question: How do you get beachy waves?

Answer: Summer is like a big sigh of relief; it’s a time to relax and have fun, both for you and your beauty routine. The chicest summer looks are messy and imperfect—makeup left natural and dewy. Of course, like most things, anything that looks that effortless takes a lot of…well, effort! So we’re here to make it easy for you, one step at a time.

The best beachy waves:

There is something incredibly cool about just-stepped-out-of-the-ocean wavy hair. But, for those of us who don’t moonlight as The Little Mermaid, there are a few simple ways to achieve this look (sans actual seawater).

The first step to great waves is a good shampoo and conditioner to texturize your hair and prepare it for the loose waves you want. A great, affordable pair of products is Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Shampoo and conditioner.  Beware though: the smell lands somewhere between coconut and play-dough. You’ve been warned.

The next step in attaining the hair of a beach goddess is a good sea salt spray. These things are everywhere nowadays, but the real trick is finding one that works. My go-to is Lush’s Sea Spray. All natural, cruelty-free, and smelling just like summer, this product is literally my number one hair product ever, and a bottle costs less than fifteen dollars. Just spritz a decent amount onto damp hair, tousle it with your fingers, and let it air dry. You’re welcome.

Lastly, if you have hair that doesn’t take curls or waves easily, you may want to break out a curling wand to finish off this look. Just take a few random strands throughout your hair and brush through the curls with your fingers. Finish off with just a tiny bit of hairspray (or more sea spray), and you’re good to go.

Alright, so your hair looks amazing. Now what?

Drop-dead gorgeous makeup, that’s what.

First, use a BB cream to smooth out any redness or imperfections (I absolutely adore Tarte’s cream). Next, dab a little bit of blush onto the apples of your cheeks. I’m a big fan of Nars’ Orgasm, but a great coral shade like Benefit’s CORALista would look great too.

Now, apply a luminator on the bridge of nose, just above your cupid’s bow, under the arches of your eyebrows, and then put just a dab on your forehead, chin, and just above each cheekbone. Blend fully. If you like bronzer, I suggest sweeping just a tiny bit over your cheeks, just under your chin, at your temples and hairline, and right under your nose (don’t sneeze).

The next step is glowy eyeshadow. When many people think of luminous makeup, their first thought is of glittering gold. However, for a more natural, beach-inspired look, instead opt for a shimmery bronze on your lids. I personally like this one. A very light coat of mascara will finish the look.

Finally, keep your lips very simple by using a lip balm. If you want to go bold, you can wear a lightly tinted gloss.

And voila! Now go give Ariel a run for her money.
