As the owner of an all-natural airbrush tanning company, I definitely have a few thoughts on achieving and maintaining a fantastic, healthy summer glow! ( I could go on forever, so I’ll try to keep this short)

First thing’s first: fake it, and in this case, don’t try to make it ;).  One of the quickiest ways to damage and age your skin is by overexposing it to the sun  aka tanning.  I know you’ve heard it a million times, and trust me: I love being outside in the sun just as much (maybe even more?) than the average person; but that being said, I don’t want to look like an old leather handbag in a few years.

So, how the heck are you supposed to achieve and maintain a great glow without sun exposure?  You guessed it, sunless tanner is the answer!  Don’t fret, thanks to modern technology, the days of walking around looking like an oompa loompa are long gone!  Below are a few easy steps to get you on your way to a beautiful, natural looking tan that you can keep up all year long.

If you already have a great tan and just want to maintain it…

Use a tan extender, IE: a lotion that has a small amount of the same active ingredient found in sunless tanners.  Jergens Natural Glow is a great, easy to find and inexpensive tan extender. A word of caution: don’t use this tan extender every day, as you may start to feel a bit orange.  I advise my clients to use an extender every other day or even every two days depending on the depth of your tan.

In addition to using a tan extender…

Drink more water and use a basic lotion.  Whether you have a natural tan or a sunless one, our tan lightens up as the top layers of our skin slough off.  By hydrating your skin from the inside out (time to bust out the water bottle) and from the outside in (lotion: any kind will do,  just steer clear of body oils) the extra hydration will help slow down the exfoliation process.

Don’t use anything abrasive / rough to the touch to scrub down in the shower; you will scrub your tan right off! Treat your beautiful skin with care ;)

If you want to maintain a healthy glow year round…

Self tan at home or seek out a great airbrush tanning professional in your neighborhood!  Feel free to comment if you’d like tips and tricks on how to self tan at home, as well as what to expect and how to prepare for tanning with a pro.

Cheers to beautiful, healthy skin!
