Question: How can I lighten my hair naturally in the sun?
Answer: Believe it or not, the sun will give your hair natural highlights! I can personally attest to this, seeing as my natural hair is supposed to be black—and after a lot of time in the sun, my hair has turned to more of a dark brown with shades of red. If you aren’t one to spend hours on end in the sun, there are ways to enhance this effect to ensure you are getting the results you desire.
Lemon Juice Method
Cut lemons in half and use either a juicer or your hands to squeeze the lemon juice into a bowl (Note: Do not use lemon juice from a bottle. The preservatives can be damaging). Dilute the juice with an equal amount of water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Shake the bottle and apply to the desired areas. Go enjoy some rays and allow the sun to dry your hair for about 30 minutes. The longer you soak up those rays, the lighter your hair will be. When you’re done, wash and condition your hair.
Brew a pot of chamomile tea by either using chamomile flowers, or 3-4 tea bags for a strong brew. Allow it to cool, and then apply it to the desired areas. As with the previous method, sit in the sun for about 30 minutes and allow your hair to lighten—then wash and condition your hair. This treatment can be repeated once every week or so.
For all of the above methods, be sure to let your hair air dry after washing, and to use a clean spray bottle. Avoid bottles that have previously contained toxic chemicals. Use moisturizing products so that your hair doesn’t become too dry and brittle.
