Question: How can I boost my nighttime skincare routine?
Answer: As much as I enjoy makeup, I have to confess that my favorite days are when I’m wearing none at all. To ensure that on these days my skin is looking fresh and hydrated, I like to spend extra time on my skincare routine. Not only is it important to remove all your makeup at the end of the day, but a nighttime skincare routine can also make for a relaxing beauty ritual.
There are three elements to the nighttime skincare routine: the first is the removal of makeup and dirt, the second is treatment or exfoliation, and the third is moisturizing. Everyone’s skin is different, but these basic steps apply to everyone.
In the winter, I like to cleanse my face with a balm cleanser. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, look no further than the oils section at your local health food store. Both coconut oil and jojoba oil do a fantastic job of removing every speck of dirt on your face, while at the same time keeping your skin hydrated and protected. Massage the oil into dry skin and then remove it with a wet washcloth. If you fancy a more streamlined product, Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm is a great option. If you’re wearing makeup, make sure you take time to remove it and consider using a balm cleanser followed by a milk or cream cleanser.
Once you’ve removed your makeup, it’s time to treat it to a little TLC. Whether you exfoliate every night or a few times a week, exfoliation is key to having beautiful skin. When you exfoliate, you’re turning skin cells over to allow new ones to come through. It’ll help with dark spots, acne, wrinkles, and the general radiance of your skin. When looking for an exfoliator, look for something that doesn’t have alcohol but instead contains combination of Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Citrus Acid, or Retinol. I love REN Resurfacing AHA Concentrate. It’s all-natural, and I swear it has saved my skin.
Another treatment that can be used every night on top of the exfoliator is a serum or oil. Depending on your skin, you’ll want to tailor this treatment to your own skin issues. I personally love face oils because they regulate the oil production in your skin and provide natural fatty acids that will have you waking up with beautiful skin. I’m partial to Tarte Maracuja Oil because it is naturally high in Vitamin C and helps with radiance and acne.
Lastly, moisturizing is the final step. It is absolutely worthwhile to invest in a good night cream that’s hydrating and has natural skin-benefiting properties. Origins, Korres, and REN are a few natural brands that I love, and they offer many different options. Once you start caring about your skin and spending those luxurious moments at night massaging night cream in, you’ll never want to go back. Your skin will thank you, and you’ll wake up with better skin and the confidence to leave your house without a speck of foundation on.
