Question: How can I achieve ombre hair at home?
Answer: I couldn’t tell you how happy I was to see this question! I have ombre hair and have been doing it myself for as long as I can remember. Here are some tips and tricks for getting the look just right!
Step One: Get your highlighting kit from a drugstore. I use a kit that has three color highlighting options, which includes an option for dark brown hair, medium brown hair, and blonde hair. If you have brown hair and it’s your first time experimenting with bleach, then start with the first level of color. This way, you won’t fry your hair and you’ll get the gradual fade effect you want. It may take about two rounds of bleaching to get your hair the perfect shade. Bleaching is a slow process, especially if you want to keep your hair healthy.
Step Two: Follow the mixing directions on the back of the box. Next, depending on how thick your hair is, clip your hair up into two or three sections starting from the top of your ear. Make sure your hair is combed out and mostly straight.
Step Three: Put your gloves on and take a small strand of your hair in one hand. Decide where you’d like to begin the ombre process and coat the bleach up to that point. Make sure you coat more bleach at the bottom of the strand of hair than at the top. Wrap the strand in tin foil. Repeat these steps with the rest of your hair. Remember to vary your strand thicknesses a bit and apply the bleach higher and lower on some of the strands for a natural, sun-kissed ombre color. I do this step with my hands because I feel like I have more control over where I’m applying the color, but you can also use a brush!
Step Four: Let your hair set in the foil for about 40 minutes or so. Check your hair every 10 minutes to make sure it’s processing correctly. Once your hair is as light as you would like it to be, rinse it out using the shampoo and conditioner in the kit.
Step Five: I like to let my hair dry naturally, but you can certainly blow dry it to see what your results are!
Purchase a purple shampoo to help with the brassiness that might appear. It will make your blonde color look more vibrant!
