I’ve recently become obsessed with dark, vampy plum lipstick. It started when I got my Ipsy bag for the month and received a really cool lipstain in a really gorgeous violet color. The day after, I decided to go to Sephora to find myself a lipstick and matching liner in the color of my obsession.
I found exactly what I was looking for, and I’m so excited about this color!
Today I’ll be sharing some tips on how to rock the plum lip; what to pair it with, how to make it last, and tips for the perfect application. With these tips, you’ll be rocking plum lips the whole season!
Tip 1: Strong Contour
Plum lips look exceptional with a strong contour. I have a great tip on how to get the strongest contour! Next time you get a blush by almost any drugstore brand, keep that little brush that comes with it. These brushes are horrible for applying blush, but they’re so stiff that they’re great for creating a great contour. I like to angle the brush sideways so that it creates a sharp line that I can then blend out. Be sure to contour from the top of your ear to the corner of your lip to create major cheekbones. Top with blush and highlighter and you’re all set!
Tip 2: Natural Eyes
As you can see in my picture above, plum lips look wonderful with natural eyes. Because the lips are so bold, they take up most of the attention of the face. This means that keeping the eyes natural keeps the focus on the lips, so there aren’t too many elements begging for attention. I like to keep the eyes simple with a sparkly light bronze color, like Light Bronze from the LORAC PRO Palette. Add a little bit of a darker brown into the crease to add definition, and you’re all set! Top with some mascara to complete the look.
Tip 3: Strong Brows
Unlike the picture above (where, embarrassingly, I forgot to do my brows), plum lips look great with a strong brow. Whether you’re a powder or a pencil lover, fill in your brows with slightly more product that you would usually use. Top with some tinted brow gel, like Gimme Brow! by Benefit. This is my favorite brow gel because it contains fibers that attach to your individual hairs, filling in sparse patches and creating a full, volumized look. It comes in two shades—light medium and medium dark, and either is sure to suit your brow needs!
Tip 4: The Application
My favorite way to apply lipstick starts with lip liner. I’m obsessed with Sephora’s lipliner in Pleasant Plum. It’s a gorgeous plum color that matches the lipstick I’ll be sharing with you! Begin by lining the outer line of your lips. Then, fill in the rest of your lips with the color. This will help the color last, plus, even if the lipstick comes off, there’s still color underneath. Next, grab your lipstick. I’ve been using Crush from Sephora Collection. It’s a beautiful plum color, and I’m really excited that I ended up buying it. The best part? These two products—the lipliner and the lipstick—come out to under $20!
Tip 5: Make it Last
The best and easiest way to make lipstick last only uses two things—a tissue, and some loose, translucent powder. All you have to do is apply your lipstick, then lightly lay the tissue over your lips. Then, take a brush with some translucent powder and lightly dust it on your lips, over the tissue. It seems odd, but it actually works incredibly well! With this trick, your lipstick will be staying on all day!
I hope this post inspired you to grab some plum lipstick and try this look out! No matter what skin color you have, plum lipstick will look beautiful on you. Rock your plum lips this season! What is your favorite lip trend of this year?
