I’ve been subscribed to Ipsy for about a year now and I’ve really enjoyed getting my bag every month! Today I’ll be going over the pros and cons of being subscribed to Ipsy. By the end you should want to sign up too!
First of all, let’s talk about what Ipsy is. Ipsy is a service similar to Birchbox or other beauty product services that send out samples for a small charge each month (plus a cute bag!). It was created by Michelle Phan, one of Youtube’s most famous beauty gurus. These samples are usually a decent size and can include makeup, hair products, or other body products. Basically, you get five products to try and review at the price of $10 a month. Many of the products are full-sized, like lip glosses and some eyeliners. Other things like mascara and hair products are sample-sized. Having been subscribed for almost a year, yes, I have paid about $100 for all this, but I’ve gotten so many things that I’ve either loved right away or grown to love! Let’s jump into the pros and cons and you can decide whether or not it’s worth it to jump on the Ipsy bandwagon!
Pro #1: The Price
In my opinion, the price is a complete pro. If you think about it, some of these products are $10 in and of themselves. To get five products a month is a steal in my opinion! For example, this month I got a sample of Tarte’s Lights Camera Lashes mascara, and a sample of a Style Sexy Hair Heat Protectant (and of course three others, but we’ll focus on these). Both of these lines are high-end, and their products aren’t going to be that cheap. To get good sized samples of each is a crazy good deal in my opinion! To you, $10 might be too much, but I definitely consider it a bargain!
Pro #2: Try Before You Buy
This service is one of my favorites because it gives you the chance to try products before you buy them. For example, a few months back, I got a sample of Urban Decay’s Perversion mascara. After falling in love with it, I bought the full size plus the primer. I really liked that I got to try it out before committing to buying it. This works for every product they send, save the ones that are already full-sized, but even then, you can repurchase! I definitely appreciate being able to try things out before paying full price for them, so I love this service.
Pro #3: Offer Codes
The other great thing about Ipsy is that almost every product has an offer code for a discount. For example, this month I got a 25% off code for the NYX Glam Collection. These offers can add up super quick resulting in a great deal! There are also other offers called Ipsy Me offers that come out every Tuesday and Thursday. These offers feature products that Ipsy gives samples of, but the Ipsy Me offers typically are for full-sized versions of things. For example, I got a NYX set from Ipsy Me for a really good price! The set contained a blush and two eyeshadows from the baked collection, and it was a great price! I definitely pay attention to the emails I get and take advantage of these offers!
Pro #4: Variety
The variety that Ipsy carries has become amazing over the past year. I can’t even count how many brands Ipsy supplies nowadays, but there’s such great variety each month! This month I got one skin care product, one hair product, and three makeup products. I love how balanced this bag was, and most bags contain a similar variety. I’ve gotten products that range from mattifying fluid (yeah, that’s a thing) to hand cream and everything in between.
Pro #5: Customization
Finally, there is customization. When you first join Ipsy, you take a beauty quiz that tracks information such as eye color, skin color, hair color, etc. It also asks for your preferences so that Ipsy can prepare the best bag for you each month. You can also review each product you receive every month, which helps Ipsy determine what to get you the next month. There are usually anywhere from 10-15 products available each month, and Ipsy will send you five. The great part is, if you don’t like what you got, just comment on the product and other Ipsters are always willing to trade!
Con #1: Hit or Miss
The one thing about Ipsy that consistently bothers me is the constant hit or miss when it comes to the products. Usually I will like two or three of the products I get and never use the other two. This is the only thing that I wish was different—I wish we got to choose what products we wanted to get instead of them being chosen for us. Granted, I understand that Ipsy’s goal is to help every girl find what’s good for her, which involves a little choosing on their end. However, like I’ve said, I’ve been with Ipsy for almost a year, and I just now got a bag of things that I completely love. I won’t lie, this month was a great bag. I do hope they will continue being good!
Con #2: The Waiting List
Unfortunately, to become an Ipster, there is a waiting list. To skip this waiting list, you can jump through a couple hoops on Facebook, but otherwise you’ll be waiting for a month or two before you can start receiving bags. Thankfully, you aren’t charged for the waiting time, but you won’t be getting anything for about a month. I’m not even sure why there is a waiting list, but there is. Super con.
That’s all I’ve got when it comes to Ipsy! Hopefully this post helped you decide whether or not to sign up for it! If you do, connect with me and let me know what you get each month! I love seeing other people’s bags almost as much as my own!
