Question: How do I get rid of stretch marks?

Answer: Stretch marks are caused by growth or weight fluctuations, and in some cases they may be unsightly and aggravating. Thankfully, there are a couple of things you can do to diminish their appearance over time (and sometimes even eliminate them altogether!). While it’s true that there’s no magical way to make stretch marks disappear, committing to a regular skin care routine will definitely help to improve the overall look and feel of the affected areas on your body.

Start by taking a washcloth or loofah and regularly exfoliating your stomach, legs, and any other affected areas while taking a shower. Using circular motions, keep exfoliating until your skin is slightly redthis means that the top layer of dry, dead cells has been removed and your skin is working to repair itself. Just don’t scrub too hard!

Once you’re out of the shower, you’ll want to apply a moisturizer to the marks to speed up the fading process. There are tons of different products and at-home recipes to try out, but the two most effective types of stretch mark remedies are cocoa butter and lemon juice. Moisturizers that contain cocoa butter can be found at almost any drugstore, and it is recommended to apply this type of product 2-3 times a day for best results. Moisturizing once in the morning after you shower, once halfway through the day and once again before you go to bed is a good rule to follow. If you want to opt for a home remedy, dab some lemon juice (which has been said to help repair stretch marks) onto a cotton ball and apply it over the stretch marks. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then wash it off with warm water. The acidic properties of lemon juice can help to heal stretch marks and other scars; and will help decrease the appearance of stretch marks with consistent use.

Depending on the size and severity of stretch marks, it can take about 6-8 weeks before you notice substantial improvement. But, being patient and keeping up with these tips will pay offjust in time for summer!
