We’ve all been there, done that with New Year’s resolutions. Some we have stuck with and created lifelong habits out of and others we forgot about within a week. While curating my own list of goals I plan to accomplish in 2015, I realized that a few things had to do with making the most of my wardrobe and getting my style to its most potential. I figured that since I had already had a couple of ideas, I could come up with a few more and share them with you guys to get you excited about everything coming in the new year. Here are 5 ways that you can ring in the new year stylishly!

1. Clean Sweep Your Entire Closet

This one comes directly from my own list of goals for 2015. Take a look at your closet and sort them into keep, toss & donate piles. You have to be realistic here. If there are items that you haven’t worn in months or even years, it’s time to let them go. If they’re in good condition, try selling them online through apps like Poshmark and Vinted or to resale shops like Clothes Mentor and Plato’s Closet if you’re looking for quick cash. If you want to be a good samaritan, donate the items to a group home or Salvation Army. For all of the items that are too used to pass on, it’s really time to let them go. Find a way to recycle the fabrics or toss them, but do not let them get back into your closet.

2. Support Local Designers

We all have our favorite chain retail stores. You know the Zaras, the Forever 21s, the Urban Outfitters. Don’t get me wrong, all of these stores sell some cute things, but what about those local designers in your town or state trying to show off their talents? Supporting the locals with your time and money is a win-win situation in my book. Not only will you be supporting your local economy and its artists but you’ll have unique designs that you won’t see everyone else wearing. You never know, your favorite designer could be living and working just blocks away from you.

3. Be More Environmentally & Socially Conscious

As inhabitants of this planet, we have a responsibility and need to keep it running as best as we can and to help out one another. Recycling, using less energy and being watchful of your use of resources can help greatly, but your love of fashion can also impact the Earth. Everything from the materials and fabrics used, to the production, labor and transportation of items can add up and take a tole on the state of the planet and our health and well-being. The next time you want to buy a new shirt or bag, do a little research. Knowing how you purchase came to be may shock you and give you an entirely new outlook on how you shop.

4. Build A Capsule Wardrobe

I can never over-stress how important it is to have basics and essentials in your wardrobe. Putting together a killer outfit is a lot like a pyramid or ladder system. You have to start out with more of the most important pieces – the basics! When your foundation is in order it makes getting dressed and accessorizing so much easier and faster. Spend these upcoming 365 days compiling a list of your must have wardrobe pieces and shop your way to owning it all.

5. Save Up For a Big Purchase

Don’t you know that designer piece that you’ve been eyeing? Now is the time to start saving up for it because this is going to be the year that you become its proud owner. Figure out where you’ll be able to get the best deal and set a realistic savings plan for yourself. Don’t let this interfere with your responsibilities, but if you can cut down on extra spending money just a little every month, you may be able to purchase your dream item in less time than you ever imagined you could.
