Question: What eyeliner styles should I try out?

Answer: Ah, the wonderful world of eyeliner. Since there are so many different ways to wear it, I’ve broken my answer up into sections with tips on how to wear different eyeliner styles. The most important thing to remember? Don’t be afraid to experiment!

1) Pencil eyeliner

This is the most common type of eyeliner, and I would guess that most people include it in their daily beauty routine. Pencil eyeliner is soft and smudge-able, and it’s most often worn as a line across the top lash line. To mix it up, apply your liner to the outer half of the top and bottom lash lines (or waterline). This technique will open your eyes up, making them appear larger. For an edgier and more dramatic look, smudge it along your bottom lash line and set it with a dark powder.

2) Liquid eyeliner

This one is my personal favorite! Liquid liner creates clean, sharp lines and offers more control than the standard pencil eyeliner. When it comes to liquid eyeliner, the most notorious look is the classic cat eye. The great thing about winged liner is that there are tons of different shapes to try—all of which evoke a different personality. You can keep the wing small and understated, rock an artsy double wing, or become Cleopatra. It’s all about having fun and discovering the shapes you love the most!

3) Gel liner

Gel liner is similar to liquid liner in that it offers clean lines and control, but it can also create a soft look due to its texture. Though you can still create a cat eye with a stiff angled brush, one of the fun things about gel shadows and liners is that they come in a wide variety of colors. This means you can experiment with duo-tone liner, where you line your top and bottom lids with different colors. This creates an artsy look that makes a statement without being too avant-garde. I would recommend pairings that combine one neutral—like black or brown—with a vibrant color (like emerald green, sapphire blue or electric purple).
