Question: What happens when I fall asleep with makeup on?
Answer: We all love to get made-up and decked out for a girls’ night on the town. What we don’t love? Taking all of that makeup off after a long night of partying and being fabulous. Sleeping with makeup on every once in a while may not seem like a big deal, but your dermatologist would actually disagree.
According to NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Erin Gilbert, sleeping with makeup hinders your skin’s recovery process from everyday elements (dirt, oil). This lack of recovery can lead to clogged pores, acne, and will eventually create fine lines and premature skin aging. You’re probably freaking out at the moment, trying to count how many times you’ve slept with your makeup on throughout your life. Fear not! There are ways to combat these side effects and keep your skin as radiant as ever!
The morning after you’ve committed this mortal skincare sin, the first natural first step is to remove your makeup. Use Pond’s Cold Cream, which doubles as a cleansing moisturizer, to gently remove your eye and face makeup with a tissue. Pond’s also makes makeup remover wipes, which are perfect for lazy (or worse) mornings.
After you’ve removed your makeup, it’s finally time to scrub away that dirt and grime you accumulated from last night. Stick with a gentle oil-free cleanser, or even a bar of ivory soap, to clean the skin without causing irritation. If you want something a little more rugged, try exfoliating with baking soda. Many skin medications and cleansers are already made with baking soda, so it’s a great natural exfoliant that will clear up your pores and reduce irritation. Use icy cool water to rinse your face. Not only will it shrink your pores, but it will also wake you up quicker than a cup of coffee ever would.
Once you’ve rinsed away last night’s mistakes, pat your face dry with a clean towel or washcloth. Patting your face (rather than wiping) allows some of that moisture to stay on your skin, which helps better absorb any moisturizing lotion you apply later on. Using a dirty towel is an obvious no-no, because the any grime will cake itself right back onto your skin and spoil all of your hard work!
Finally, apply your moisturizer to seal up and preserve your skin. Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel is great for any and all skin types and contains SPF for extra protection. After the moisturizer has dried, put on a fresh coat of makeup or go all natural to let your skin breathe.
Even though it’s a hassle at times, taking of your makeup before bed is extremely important and will benefit you in the long run! What are some of your rejuvenating skin care routines?
