Question: What is the best way to apply foundation?
Answer: There are several different ways to apply foundation, and each will give you a very different look. If you’re looking for a more matte natural finish, try a mineral powder foundation like bareMinerals. For a look with more coverage, go for a liquid foundation like Benefit “Hello Flawless!”. For each type of foundation you use, there are a few different tools and applications that will give you the coverage and appearance you desire.
Pressed power/mineral foundation: For this particular type of foundation, use a flat top kabuki brush for heavier application. For light application, use a large powder brush.
Liquid foundation: For the lightest application of liquid foundation, use a kabuki brush and buff it into skin using circular motions. For slightly more coverage and a dewy look, use a sponge like the Beauty Blender. Run it under warm water, squeeze out the excess and then dip it into foundation. Pat it all over the face, or in the areas you want coverage. For medium coverage, use a densely packed face brush like the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. Once again, buff foundation using circular motions. Finally, a traditional foundation brush will give the most coverage. Use like a paintbrush and sweep foundation over the face.
Stick/cream foundation: Draw dots around the face with the stick, then use any of the techniques listed above for liquid foundations. You can also apply using fingers as well (which can help warm up the foundation). Simply massage them into skin, while patting over trouble areas.
